Why don’t you just get out more?
OCEANROCKS ‘Get Out More’ and ‘I’m Bored’ T-shirts are a tribute to having a go and just enjoying the water. You don’t need to be any good at water-sports, it’s about having fun in the surf. But you never know – you may discover that you’re the next Kelly Slater or Ben Ainslie. Or maybe discover a new passion that changes your life!
There’s loads of seaside schools set up where you can learn the ropes under excellent instructors. Here’s a few suggestions (always check your surf or sailing schools has up to date accreditation and qualified instructors before booking):
National Sailing Academy
Where better to learn to sail than the waters which hosted the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in Weymouth & Portland. The academy is home to the not-for-profit Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre. It has been set up in honour of the inspirational TEAM GB medalist who tragically died during a sailing accident in the San Francisco in 2013. The centre offers sailing inspiration and instruction for everyone from complete beginners to future Olympic champions, plus other courses like power-boating!
You can shake a selfie stick at the amount of schools that have sprung up all over the southwest in recent years. Newquay in Cornwall is the mecca for many who want to learn to surf, but there are plenty of other great local surf schools too.
Dan Joel surf
Tucked away on the Lizard Peninsula’s stunning Poldu Beach, Dan Joel Surf has been named by the Sunday Times as a top five surf school. There’s a car park, toilets and great little café bar to enjoy once you’ve conquered the waves at this National Trust-run beach.
North Devon is one of the most awesome places in the UK, with Woolacombe Beach regularly voted as the best beach in the country.
Nearby Surf South West prides itself as being one of the longest-running and best in the country with sole teaching rights to the sands at Croyde and Saunton.
Accredited by the British Surfing Association, and pegged as a Surfing GB centre of excellence, there’s also plenty of accommodation nearby too and it’s only about an hour from the M5.
From wind-surfing and kite-surfing to coasteering and kayaking there’s loads more to try on the water. Try Water Sporty – always check that schools are accredited and instructors qualified.
